No matter what you do you can’t get the lens to retract. This is a very common problem. Usually sand or grit gets inside the camera and interferes with the lens extension mechanism. Replacing the battery and restarting the camera should be your first approach. If this does not work try to blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens....
Auto-focus is misbehaving, or not working at all. Try manual focus. Press the “info” button by the shutter button to display shooting information, the “i” button to the bottom-left of the screen, select the current focus mode (should be AF-A/S/C), then choose “MF” for manual focus mode. Make sure that an auto-focus mode is set. Press the “info” button by the shutter button. Near the middle of the menu, you should see “AF-A,” AF-S," or AF-C....
