Introduction
The issue is that one of the sound modes of the OnePlus 6 or 6T does not get recognized by the software anymore. The device can only be set into two modes - either sound, vibrate, or silence - and the third one is not recognized.
The cause is the accumulation of dust in the slider. This prevents the slider from reaching (one of the two) outermost positions. It is possible that the slider does look clean from the outside and that the slider still moves completely to the non-working side, but that it still does not recognize it.
What you need
Step 1
The problem
- Although the three distinct slider positions are set, the phone only recognizes two of them.

Step 2
Clean the slider
- Use a small tool to clean up the two different sides: the slider side and the top side.
- Be careful not to scratch the side of the phone. A soft-tipped tool, like the iFixit spudger, is ideal.

Step 3
Clean the other sides as well!
- Clean the other two sides as well to prevent the same issue from occurring.

If you cannot remove more dust from the slider then it should be fixed. Try moving it to the other positions and feel whether the slider clicks into the positions. If the slider is still not functioning correctly, then perhaps a replacement of the slider is necessary. A replacement guide for the older OnePlus 5T can be found here.
