My phone will not read the SIM card to allow me to edit contacts or make phone calls.

Try restarting your device and switching the SIM card from slot 1 to slot 2.

Start by turning off your device and removing the SIM card. Next, clean any dust or debris from the SIM card or its terminals on the phone and reinserting the card. If this is unsuccessful, try restarting the device with the SIM card in slot 2. If that works then its possible that the SIM card slot is broken.
