Introduction

Unlike other replacement guides, you will need an additional tool besides the iFixit toolkit. A bearing puller is required and it can be found from any local hardware or auto parts shops for a cost of approximately $30.

If the tool is spinning slowly or not at all, it might be because of the bearing. This guide will explain the steps needed for replacement.

What you need

Step 1

              Rear Motor Bearing               
  • Ensure that the device is unplugged from any power source to avoid electrical shock.
  • Flip the device, making the gray part face to the right.
  • Remove four 14mm screws using a T20 Torx screwdriver.
  • Remove four 18mm screws using a T20 Torx screwdriver.

Step 2

  • Hold the device so the gearbox assembly faces directly towards you.
  • Remove the four screws using a T20 Torx screwdriver.
  • Using a plastic opening tool, pry the gearbox assembly away from the clam shell.

Step 3

  • After all necessary screws are removed, gently remove the upper red cover from the device.
  • Remove the gray motor and gearbox assembly.
  • Remove the gearbox gently as to not damage the brushes.

Step 4

  • Attach a bearing removal tool to the bearing.
  • Tighten the bearing puller until the bearing comes off of the motor shaft.
  • For easier removal, lightly heat the bearing with a propane torch.
  • Heat and then press the replacement bearing onto the shaft.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
