Introduction

The super easy fix is to fold some aluminum foil several times to fill the gap and conduct power. I didn’t feel like doing something so hacky, so I decided to investigate.

Generally a problem like this is due to the spring on the final - terminal losing its springiness. Usually because of corrosion. I decided to open the keyboard and have a look.

It turned out that there was no corrosion (I actually never used batteries in the keyboard), and the spring was just like new. But upon looking around, I realized when I had removed the battery cage that it was held to the keyboard case very tightly. My guess was that it was so tight it was pinching the batteries and holding them in place just a little bit forward of the spring.

The attached image shows the battery cage, after I removed it and inserted the batteries to see what was up - they fit in perfectly.

There are 6 screws that hold this battery cage to the case, and 2 on the front and 2 on the back pinch it in the direction perpendicular to which the batteries move and insert. Well to relieve the pressure I just removed the front 2 screws. Note that they also were screwed in at a bit of an angle and so I thought they were moving the cage the wrong way.

The end of the story is that after removing these 2 screws, the batteries slotted into the cage perfectly with complete freedom and no pinching. The keyboard was fixed.

Step 1

              Disassemble the Keyboard

Step 2

Unscrew part of the battery cradle.
  • Remove the two brass screws that are closer to the front of the keyboard.
  • That’s basically it, you can see them removed in the 2nd step.
  • 3rd image shows the keyboard powered up and working before the actual keyboard was replaced.
