If you tried powering on your Surface Pro 4 but the device doesn’t respond or it turns on and then off, the problem could be caused by a number of issues including being stuck in sleep mode or having a low battery.

Replace the power cord

If the LED light in the tip of the power cord does not turn on when the Surface Pro 4 is plugged in to an outlet, then there may be a problem with the power cord itself. In that case, you would need to replace it.

Step 1. Force Restart

Hold down the power button on your device for at least 30 seconds and then release it. Press the power button once to turn the device back on.

If this does not work proceed to step 2.

Step 2. Two-button Shutdown

Hold down the power button for 30 seconds and then release it. Hold down the device’s power button and its volume-up button for at least 15 seconds then let go. Wait 10 seconds, and then press the power button to start up the device.

Step 3. Replace Power Button

If the above steps do not work, you may have a faulty or disconnected power button.

Replace the button and test to see if the Surface Pro turns on.

Normally, your Surface Pen will allow interaction with the screen of your Surface Pro. If you attempt to use the Surface Pen and the Surface Pro does not respond or responds in an unexpected manner, there may be an issue with the pen.

Check if the pen tip is scratched or broken. If it is broken you can purchase a replacement kit at various electronics retailers.

Go to the Bluetooth settings on your Surface to ensure that that Bluetooth is enabled and your Surface Pen is connected to Bluetooth.

If it still doesn’t work, go to Settings, select the device and click Remove Device. Then pair the pen with the Surface by holding the top button on the pen for seven seconds and then select Pair on the Bluetooth device list.

You might need to replace the battery for the pen. To do this, twist the cap counterclockwise and pull it off of the pen. Remove the battery and replace with a new AAAA battery. Replace the cap.

The Surface Pro 4 may have a battery issue if the battery level does not increase when it is plugged into a power source. It might display such messages as “Plugged in, Not Charging,” or “Battery Not Detected.

If the above steps do not work, your battery may be faulty. You will need to replace the battery.
