Note: If your battery looks puffy or swollen, take extra precautions.

What you need

              Turn off the keyboard               
  • Flip the keyboard’s power switch into the OFF position.
  • A red indicator is visible beneath the switch when it’s in the OFF position.

Step 2

              Heat the left foot pad               
  • Flip the keyboard over and lay it top-side down onto a clean work surface.
  • Lay the keyboard on a soft towel if your work surface may scratch it.
  • Heat an iOpener and lay it on the left plastic foot for about two minutes.
  • You may also use a hair dryer or heat gun, but be careful not to overheat the keyboard.

Step 3

              Remove the foot pad               
  • Insert the pointed end of a spudger under the edge of the foot.
  • Push the spudger underneath the foot and pry up to release its adhesive.
  • The foot should come away from the keyboard without much force. If it feels stuck, apply more heat and try again.
  • Once you can grip the foot with your fingers, peel it up and away from the keyboard to remove it.
  • Repeat steps 2–3 for the remaining two feet.

              Remove the battery cover               
  • Use the pointed end of a spudger to poke through the film underneath each foot to access the screw underneath.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three 7.6 mm screws securing the battery cover.
  • The battery cover will remain held in place by plastic clips.

  • Insert an opening pick in between the battery cover and the keyboard along its top edge to release the clips securing the battery cover.
  • The rest of the battery cover clips may free themselves at this point. If so, skip the next step.

Step 7

  • Insert an opening pick in between the battery cover and the keyboard along the other edge to release the rest of the clips.
  • During reassembly, check to make sure the battery cover is installed in the correct orientation. If installed backwards, the screws holes will not align.

  • Remove the battery cover.

              Disconnect the battery               
  • Use a spudger to gently “walk” the battery cable out of its connector.
  • During reassembly, make sure the battery connector is not upside-down before you insert it.

              Remove the battery               
  • Remove the three power cables from their channel in the keyboard.

  • Insert the flat end of a spudger underneath the short end of the battery opposite the cables.
  • Push the spudger underneath the battery, separating it from the adhesive holding it to the keyboard.
  • Make sure you push underneath the battery and not into it. Don’t bend or deform the battery.
  • If the battery is not removing easily, apply a few drops of high strength (≥90%) isopropyl alcohol underneath and tilt the keyboard around to direct the alcohol to the adhesive.
  • Remove the battery.
  • To install a replacement battery:
  • Remove any leftover adhesive from the battery well.
  • Apply double sided tape or pre-cut adhesive to secure the new battery.

Push the spudger underneath the battery, separating it from the adhesive holding it to the keyboard.

Make sure you push underneath the battery and not into it. Don’t bend or deform the battery.

Remove the battery.
