Your computer powers down unexpectedly.

Check and see if your laptop vents are being obstructed and airflow is being restricted. Remove any objects near vents including: towels, blankets, garbage, etc.

Turn the computer to the backside and unscrewing the 10 bolts that are identified with red circles in Figure 1. (Use the 64 bit driver and the Phillips Head (PH 0) for all exterior screws)

  1. Label a section on your magnetic project mat “Back Cover SB (Short Bolts)” and place the 10 bolts in it

  2. Unscrew the 4 bolts identified with blue circles in Figure 1

  3. Label a different area of the magnetic mat “Back Cover LB (Long Bolts)” and place the 4 bolts in it

  4. Use the blue Opening Tool to pry-open the back cover

  5. Insert another Opening Tool in the gap between the cover and PC

  6. Slide it around the perimeter of the PC freeing the back cover

  7. Remove the cover

  8. Buy a can of compressed aerosol and blow away dust from inside

These 3 programs will help you determine the temperature of your Lenovo computer

Solution 1

  1. Download and install Speccy from the link provided, https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download.

  2. Launch the program after the installation is finished.

Click on the “CPU” icon on the right side of the program window.

  1. Then click on the blue next arrow to proceed to the name of your CPU. The temperature of your computer will be shown near “Average Temperature” display. If your Lenovo has more than one cores, the temperature of each one will be listed beneath that.

Solution 2

  1. Download Real Temp from https://www.techpowerup.com/download/tec….

  2. This program does not need to be installed, unzip the files to a directory of your choosing.

  3. Double-click on the “RealTemp” application file.

  4. After the application is open look under “Temperature” to see the temperature of your Lenovo’s CPU cores. RealTemp can be used for all Intel single-core processors.

Solution 3

  1. Download and install CoreTemp from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Windows-Wid….

  2. After your installation of the program is complete, double click it to launch the application.

  3. Look under “temperature readings” to so see what the temperature for each of your computer’s cores is.

  4. If the temperature is within the parameters of the device, then overheating isn’t the problem of the shutdown and move to Solution 2.

  5. Download the latest BIOS to the Desktop for ease of location

  6. Open Lenovo support website

  7. Key in your product name

  8. On the product page, click “Drivers & Software”

  9. Filter by “BIOS/UEFI”, and choose the corresponding OS information

  10. Download and install the BIOS following the readme file

  11. Right click the BIOS flash package and choose “Run as administrator”. (Note: Double clicking the BIOS flash package will not execute this program in Windows Vista.)

  12. Windows will pop-up a self-extracting window, click on the “Install” button.

  13. Click on the “Flash BIOS” button.

  14. A warning window will be displayed to remind the user to connect the system power outlet and to provide other flash information.

  15. Click on the “OK” button, BIOS update flashing program will run automatically. (Note: Please wait until the BIOS update flashing program completes installation.)

  16. When the BIOS update is complete, the system will reboot automatically.

  17. Try to reinstall the energy management and check the issue isn’t trying to conserve energy by shutting down unexpectedly.

The screen does not display when the computer is powered on.

  1. When presented with the screen press [Windows]+[Enter] to activate the windows narrator.

  2. Press [Tab] until you can navigate to the shutdown button, shut down the machine (without actually seeing anything on screen).

  3. Wait for 1-5 minutes before turning back on! (This is IMPORTANT, if you do not wait, you will end up with the same black screen)

  4. Windows loads the login screen after Lenovo loading logo - machine starts as if nothing was wrong

  5. When presented with the blank screen, press the [Power] button to put the machine to sleep

  6. Wait for 1-5 minutes before turning back on! (This is IMPORTANT, if you do not wait you will end up with the same black screen).

  7. Press the [Power] button again to bring machine out of sleep mode - Windows login screen becomes visible

  8. Reset the machine to Windows 8/8.1 and do not upgrade to windows 10, (the problem seems to only occur with windows 10).

The speakers play distorted or no sound.

  1. Right-click the sound icon in the task bar at the bottom right of the screen.

  2. Select Playback Devices

  3. Select Mixer

  4. Make sure none is disabled

  5. Click Start, type Run. Select Run. A Run dialogue box will appear.

  6. Type devmgmt.msc in the run box and click the OK button. (This is to open Device Manager window)

  7. In Device Manager, expand category “Sound, video and game controllers”

  8. Under “Sound, video and game controllers,” right-click on your sound card device name (A context menu will pop up). Then select Uninstall.

  9. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to “Delete the driver for this device” and click the OK button.

  10. Restart your PC for the change to take effect, after restarting your device, Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

  11. In Device Manager, right-click on your sound device name. Select Update Driver Software.

  12. Click Search automatically for updated driver software. (Windows will search and install the new driver for you.

  13. Restart your PC for the change to take effect.

  14. Right-Click the sound icon in the taskbar at the bottom right of the screen.

  15. In Playback Devices, select speaker, which is set as your default, and click Properties.

  16. Click the Advanced tab. Under “Default Format”, alter the sample rate and bit depth until one of the setting works.

  17. Click Apply and OK to save the change. (Preferably select 24 bit, 44100 Hz or 24 bit, 192000 Hz.

These next steps apply only for machine with CONEXANT driver

  1. Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar located at the bottom right of the screen and select Playback Devices.

  2. Right-click on the CONEXANT audio device and click Properties.

  3. Click on the Enhancement tab above and check the box labeled Disable all enhancements and Apply.

  4. Click Start and search for services.msc2. Click on services.

  5. Scroll down to Windows Audio and double click to open menu.

  6. If the service has been stopped, your system audio will not function correctly. Restart it be double-clicking and selecting Start.

  7. Double check the service start-up type. Audio services should be set to Automatic by default.

  8. Click on Apply.

The computer does not power on after pushing the power button.

If your computer turns on, but does not boot up windows, there is likely a hard drive error. First, you should reinstall the Windows operating system. This can be done by getting a Windows DVD for your version of Windows and following the Repair instructions on the disc. Once you have had to do this more than twice, you should replace the hard drive.

If there is no response when you hit the power button, then the battery may be dead. To solve this issue, try charging the battery. If the battery does not charge, there could be an issue with your charger or the battery. If you think there is a problem with the charger, try using another one. If the battery still does not charge, it is likely broken. You can replace it by opening up the computer.

The computer does not respond when keys are pressed.

Power on your computer. At the BIOS splash screen, press F1 on your internal keyboard. You should see a message “Entering System Setup.” If you are able to enter BIOS, make sure that you can navigate through the menus to ensure basic functionality. While there, press the CapsLk key and ensure that the indicator light turns on or off.

If you are not able to enter BIOS, try pressing the blue ThinkVantage button or press the Enter key.

Boot into your operating system. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad. Using your internal keyboard, press each letter key and each number key to determine if your keystrokes are being recorded properly. If certain keys do not work, make note of these.

Check to see if you have installed any keyboard mapping software that would be interfering with normal keyboard functions.

Boot into Windows Safe Mode and test keyboard functionality with notepad. Please refer to step “B” above.

Reset the internal ThinkPad keyboard, if applicable.

If the keyboard is a customer replaceable unit (CRU), then reset the keyboard connector. Please verify this in your system’s Hardware Maintenance Manual.
